MACBETH REFLECTION
Witches: I figured out that witches are able to see the future, because in Act 1, Scene 3, witches tell future of Banquo and Macbeth. Based on this scene, witches have spiritual power. Witches are look like male because in the play, macbeth mentions they have beards.
Macbeth: Main character of the play. He is a thane of Glamis, likely to become a king
Banquo: friend of Macbeth, witches predict that Banquo is not as great as Macbeth, but better than others. ("lesser than Macbeth, and greater", "not so happy, yet much happier".) also, his son will become a king.
Ross: King's messenger, he flatters to king Duncan.
Angus: Also a messenger for king Duncan, working with Ross. He admires Macbeth

-Witches tell future about Banquo and Macbeth

-conflict over the throne, Macbeth will be a king, so does Banquo's son.


ACT 1.5 1.6
  • What do we learn about Lady Macbeth in these scenes?
We learn that Lady Macbeth is a firm and steady woman, also she seems very jealous of Macbeth at the same time. I also assume that Lady Macbeth is very bossy to her husband because she tries to murder Duncan by using her husband.
  • How might Lady Macbeth answer the question “What is the meaning of life?” Explain your answer.
I believe Lady Macbeth's meaning of life is gain whatever she wants even though it is impossible. Throughout the quotations by her, I can see that her personality is very ambitious and she will do everything to obtain what she wants even though it is in cruel way.
  • Identify and write out two of Lady Macbeth’s lines that are particularly striking. Explain why you selected the lines.
"you spirits/That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here,/ And fill me from the crown to the toe top-full/ Of direct cruelty" (1.5, 38-41)
This line by Lady Macbeth shows she will put her natural femininity away for a while so that she can do the bloody deeds to seize the crown.
"Look like the innocent flower, But be the serpent under it." This quotation means pretend to be a friend, when you are actually an enemy, but remember your true intention, in this scene, which means murdering Duncan.
  • Identify one significant word that Lady Macbeth uses in 1.5 or 1.6, and define both the denotation and connotation of the word. Explain why you think the word is significant.
significant word: hell (1-4, line 41)
Denotation: the place or state of punishment of the wicked after death; the abode of evil and condemned spirits
Connotation: Dark, bad situation or environment
Lady Macbeth uses this word after she got a message that King will be visiting her house tonight. She explains about how tonight is going to be, which will be like a hell because she is going to murder King Duncan.


ACT 1.7
“Why has Macbeth decided to kill King Duncan by the end of Act 1?”
In Act 1, scene 7, Macbeth wanted to show Lady Macbeth that he is a true man, and by killing Duncan, make him look like a real man.
Macbeth and his wife decide to kill Duncan by make him drunk and kill while he is sleeping, so that they can blame the servant in his room. Macbeth hesitate to kill Duncan once, however, Lady Macbeth encourage Macbeth by saying, "When you durst do it,", "then you were a man" (1.7 line 49)


ACT 2
  • How does Macbeth react to the killing of Duncan? Why does he react this way?
    Macbeth regrets about what he have done by saying "this is a sorry sight"(line 20). He also tells Lady Macbeth what he saw and heard, Macbeth expects he should not sleep anymore
  • How does Lady Macbeth react to the killing of Duncan? Why does she react this way?
    Lady Macbeth thinks that it is not necessary to say a sorry sight. Lady Macbeth does not feel guilty for killing Duncan, Moreover, she tries to keep Macbeth saying about his visions because it will drive them mad. "These deeds must not be thought after theses ways," (line 34)

ACT 3.5, 3.6

Scene 5: The queen of weird sisters (witches), Hecate appears and scold them for telling the prophecy to Macbeth.
Scene 6: Lennox and lord have a conversation about Macbeth's lies and they suspect Macbeth for murdering Banquo and King Duncan.
  • In 3.6, what suspicions does the Lord have about Macbeth?
Malcolm and Donalbain fled to England, and this angered Macbeth to prepare a war. The Lord thinks Macbeth killed Duncan.

ACT 4.1
  • What does Macbeth want in this scene?
Macbeth wants prophecies from the Weird Sisters.
  • What stands in his way?
Macduff stands in his way because Macduff keeps suspecting on Macbeth. Also, Macduff had fled to Fife to threat Macbeth.
  • How does Macbeth attempt overcome the obstacles in his way?
Macbeth prepared to seize the city that Macduff fled, Fife.
  • What do the Witches want in this scene?
The Witches will provoke Macbeth to commit bad deeds and ultimately punish him.

ACT 5
  • How has Lady Macbeth transformed by the end of the play?
At the end of the scene Lady Macbeth became timid because
